Fourth of July weekend is here and that means one thing: fireworks. With many displays throughout the Hudson Valley this weekend, it is important to be aware of both the safety and the laws surrounding these explosives.
Updated Fireworks Laws
Within the last few years, New York State legalized the purchase and use of sparkling devices, usually known as sparklers. All other fireworks have not been legalized. The sale of sparklers is permitted temporarily. Permanent stores can sell them between June 1 and July 5 while stands can only sell them between June 20 and July 5. You must be 18 years or older to purchase and use sparklers. Keep in mind, they are still prohibited throughout New York City. Also, note that only sparklers with wooden dowels are legal.
Fireworks Safety
Unfortunately, many people are injured by fireworks each year. They are explosives, after all. If you are at a fireworks display, stay away from the launch location. If you are using sparklers, do so safely and never use them outside. Make sure you have a bucket of water on hand to put the used sticks into. Please note that sparkling devices are those that do not leave the ground.
