New York Speed Week

On Behalf of | Jun 16, 2017 | Blog, Criminal Law |

Between June 7th and June 13th, New York State Police conducted an annual Speed Week, which targeted drivers who disobeyed traffic laws by speeding, distracted driving, and other traffic infractions. The campaign aims to protect drivers and their passengers from the dangers of motorists who choose to ignore the rules of the road.

Throughout the week, State Troopers stopped motorists who were speeding in both identifiable State Police cars as well as those that are concealed and blend in with the rest of the non-police vehicles on the road. If pulled over for speeding during speed week, you can expect to face a number of consequences.

If you are pulled over for speeding 1-10 mph over the speed limit for a first offense, you can expect to face a fine between $45 and $150. Those speeding between 11 and 30 mph over the speed limit will face a fine between $90 and $300. Finally, first offenders of a speeding violation of at least 31 mph over the speed limit will face a fine between $180 and $600.

Like any other crime, the penalties increase with each conviction. For example, if you have three convictions of speeding between 1 and 10 mph over the speed limit, your fine increases to between $45 and $525. Third convictions of speeding 11-30 mph over the limit will result in a fine between $90 and $675. Finally, a third conviction of speeding 31 mph or more over the limit will result in a fine between $180 and $975. It is important to note that with each traffic violation you face, you will acquire points on your license that may increase insurance premiums.
