Combination Crimes Lead to Harsher Convictions

On Behalf of | Sep 8, 2017 | Blog, Criminal Law |

When a person commits a crime, they will already be facing a number of consequences ranging from fines, jail time, and the social stigma that is attached to having a criminal record that will appear again and again throughout the course your life. However, when you commit a crime that is escalated because there were actually multiple offenses taking place during the crime, you will face even greater consequences.

Gun Crimes

One of the most serious offenses a person can face is when they illegally use a gun. New York State has very strict gun laws and those result in extremely harsh penalties if broken. An example of a combination crime would be if a person was arrested for larceny but was found to have a gun, the crime is upgraded to a robbery. If you were charged with simple assault but there was a gun involved, the charge is upgraded to an aggravated assault.

Child Endangerment

Any time a person commits a crime and a child is present and put at risk, the individual can be charged not only with the crime they committed but also with a child endangerment charge, which is quite serious. Your child may be taken away by Child Protective Services. For example, if you get a DWI that is a big problem. But it is a bigger problem if you were charged with driving drunk with a child in the car.
